In this segment of Virasat 2017, SIMA’s founder Arijit Mahalanabis has a conversation with emerging mridangist Arvind Raman. Currently a freshman in high school, Arvind studied mridangam for many years with his uncle, M. Lakshman. Since Arvind and his uncle were geographically separated, much of his training was over the internet, supplemented with occasional personal visits. For the last two years, Arvind has been under the guidance of Lakshman’s Guru, Vidwan Palghat T. R. Rajamani. Arvind’s training with his present Guru has been in the traditional Gurukulam style. We focus on Arvind’s experiences, growing up in the United States while studying a traditional art, both through the internet, and through more traditional methods.
